Research Areas: Behavioral / Biomedical

Research in my laboratory focuses on three areas. Our major research effort is directed toward dissecting the genetic architecture of behavior in Drosophila melanogaster, including olfactory behavior, aggression and locomotion. Our second interest is to identify ensembles of genes that predispose to human disorders, including alcohol related phenotypes and ocular hypertension (a prelude to primary open angle glaucoma) through comparative genomic approaches by which we can identify evolutionarily conserved candidate genes and networks in Drosophila for follow-up association studies in human populations. A third long standing endeavor is aimed at determining the functions of the olfactomedin gene family in development of the nervous system, especially dendritic differentiation of olfactory sensory neurons, using conditional knock-out mice.
