The Program in Genetics consists of a highly interactive group of scientists with foci in quantitative, developmental and computational genetics. The program also administers outstanding undergraduate and graduate training programs in genetics, partly supported by an NIH training grant on ’The Genetic Architecture of Quantitative Traits’.

Undergraduate

The Program in Genetics offers an Undergraduate Minor in Genetics to provide students with strong preparation in the principles of genetics. This Minor is appropriate for (but not limited to) students with majors in Animal Science, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Crop Science, Microbiology, Natural Resources, Nutrition Science, Plant Biology, Plant and Soil Sciences, Poultry Science, and Zoology.

The Genetics Minor requires 18 credit hours: 12 specified, three restricted elective and three unrestricted elective. A grade of “C” or better is required for all Genetics Minor courses.

The course requirements were changed effective Fall 2011. If you filed the paperwork to declare your minor BEFORE the Fall 2011 term please use the Degree Audit feature in your MyPack Portal to plan your courses.

Admissions
Students may declare their intention to complete the Genetics minor by consulting with Dr. Stephanie Curtis, Undergraduate Coordinator. Students are strongly encouraged to declare the minor early in their programs so they receive information on Genetics courses and activities from the Undergraduate Coordinator.

Certification
Paperwork for certification should be completed no later than during the registration period for the student’s final semester at NC State. Dr. Curtis will certify the minor prior to graduation. The minor must be completed no later than the semester in which the student expects to graduate from his or her degree program.
