Genetics Annual Awards for Teaching, Research, and Service
Each year at the Annual Student symposium the Genetics program awards three outstanding awards for substantial contributions to teaching, research, and service to the community. These three awards hold the namesakes of former prominent faculty members who exemplified the commitment to teaching, research, and the community. Those three awards are the The Henry E. Schaffer Teaching Award, The William R. Atchley Research Award, and The Stephanie E. Curtis Leadership Award.
The William R. Atchley Research Award
Recognizes excellence in research, particularly as evidenced by notable first-author publications, but also through other student-led activities enhancing research progress through community or resource building.
The Henry E. Schaffer Teaching Award
Recognizes exceptional teaching and dedication to education, including undergraduate teaching and mentoring, as well as outreach activities that aim to improve K-12 education or create resources with broad educational impacts.
The Stephanie E. Curtis Leadership Award
Recognizes outstanding leadership and service to, or on behalf of, the genetics community at NC State, including formal service to the Genetics & Genomics Program, outreach and extension not falling under the Schaffer Teaching Award, and other efforts that positively impact the genetics community but would not normally be formally recognized.
