Dr. Highfill is a quantitative molecular geneticist in the Mackay lab that is broadly interested in complex traits and how genetic variants are maintained in populations. By utilizing the Drosophila Genetic Reference Panel (DGRP) and combinations of advanced molecular techniques, i.e. CRISPR-Cas9, I can focus my research on two critical areas. My research focuses on (i) how genetic variation is maintained in natural populations with selection present; and (ii) what are the segregating genetic variants that are important for drug addiction.
